An astrophysicist and a farmer walk into a bar…

Aspia Space grew from a chance ‘What If?’ conversation in a Cornish pub between astrophysicist Professor Jim Geach, and a lifelong friend of his, a farmer who worked the fields of their home village of Duloe. The farmer was lamenting the fact that even with all the technology available to him, he couldn’t get precise satellite data on how his fields were performing. ‘It’s just too cloudy in Cornwall.’

It sparked an idea in Jim. He had years of experience in deep space observation: finding and understanding the faintest light signals from the furthest reaches of the universe, scouring the electromagnetic spectrum for meaning. What if you could apply these techniques where they’d never been used before: on Earth? In 2018, he set his PhD student, Mike Smith, a challenge. Write an algorithm that converts Synthetic Aperture Radar Earth Observation imagery to optical and infrared imagery… In other words, try to accurately predict satellite images of the ground as though there were no cloud at all.

Today, Aspia Space create the data to improve strategic planning, increase efficiencies, tackle crises and grow economies. Through a business-driven marriage of academic freedom and human/artificial intelligence, we use Earth observation data to radically change the way our clients act - for the better.

Our Values

Uncover truth through data

Not speculation from assumptions. We observe our chaotic, complex world and assimilate the data into manageable, meaningful, actionable information.

Bring science and business together

We encourage the best minds in the fields of deep learning, deep space observation and commercial strategy to find real-world, on-the-ground solutions for all industries.

Nurture a culture of discovery

Aspia Space started with a ‘What if?’ That’s why we give our team the freedom to question the norm and the resources to discover the new.

Think deeper, think sideways

When comedian Billy Connolly was asked where he gets his ideas from, he said: ‘Everybody just keeps looking forward. All the interesting stuff is left and right.’

Knowlege is transferable

We believe applying learning across disciplines uncovers deeper insights and, just sometimes, leads to breakthrough discoveries.

Enable smarter choices

Our radical approach aims to deliver unique insights that no one else can. Because people make better decisions when they can see the truth on the ground.
